The demand of granting Central University status to Jadavpur University has found a new supporter in Abhijit Mukherjee, the Congress MLA and son of Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Mukherjee, an alumnus of Jadavpur University who graduated as a mechanical engineer in 1984, said: "I take the responsibility to pursue the demand of granting Central university status to Jadavpur University with the Union government," Mukherjee told a convention organised to garner support on the issue.
